Rifle Permits and Transport
Documentation
We will forward you all the necessary information you will need to apply for the in transit/temporary import permit for your firearms on your upcoming trip to South Africa. Please contact us.
Traveling With Firearms
Please also ensure that if you are travelling through another country in transit with firearms that you have the required permits and paperwork for that specific country (for example Dubai and Amsterdam require in transit permits), also some airlines like Emirates, British Airways and Ethiopian Airlines require notification that you are travelling with firearms before they will accept the firearms. Please ask your travel agent to assist with this or contact the airline you are using directly for the correct information; we will always recommend that you make use of an experienced hunting travel agent. Riflepermits do not make any arrangements with airlines, and we do not take any responsibility if the necessary bookings or notifications were not done with the relevant airlines you are travelling with.
If you have domestic flights in South Africa, please ensure that the airlines you are using can carry firearms.
Domestic Airlines in South Africa
You need to obtain pre-clearance with these airlines well in advance to carry the firearms on the aircraft, please contact the airlines to arrange this. Please ensure that you contact all the airlines you are using on your trip to ensure they do carry firearms.
Additional Info
Your ammunition must be in a locked ammo box and not exceeding 11 pounds / 5 kg. The airlines all have different regulations, some require that the ammo be checked in separately as one piece, others do require that you put the ammo inside your check in luggage.
No permits are needed for bows and archery equipment for entry into South Africa, but some airlines do not allow this sporting equipment, please confirm with the airline you are using.
No permits are needed to import suppressors into South Africa, suppressors are allowed. For USA hunters please ensure that you list the suppressor on your CBP4457 customs form to enable you to import it back into the USA after your hunt. For other countries please ensure that you comply with your country’s regulations regarding travelling with suppressors.
